LDS Week in Review: January 14th – January 19th

We had a great week in LDS. If you weren’t able to join us, here is a recap so you can see what you missed and get caught up.

Tristi continued the Latter-day Hymns series with “The Spirit of God,” one of the most well-known and beloved of all LDS hymns. Written by William W. Phelps and first sung at the dedication of the Kirtland temple, this song is so sacred it is now reserved for the most special of occasions in the Church.

In “Dinner Discussions,” Miriam kept us abreast of our weekly lessons for each age group. The topics range from the First Vision to the first chapters of the book of First Nephi. Older students will learn about the obtaining of the brass plates and the flight into the wilderness.

Miriam also reminded us of the importance of “Choosing the Best.” It’s easy to get distracted with all we have to do and to let some of our priorities become confused. She quotes a talk from Elder Oaks given in General Conference and speaks of her own internal struggle to maintain a balance in all she needs to do, and tells how she has found that studying the scriptures early in the day lends a feeling of peace to all she does with the remainder of her time.

With presidential fever running amok in the country right now, Miriam took this timely opportunity to address “Politics and the LDS Church.” She reminds us that while Mitt Romney is LDS, the Church takes no stance on political issues. Each year we are read a letter from the First Presidency urging us to study the issues for ourselves and then to vote according to our consciences. The Church never has and never will back a certain candidate. Our free agency extends into all things, politics included.

We hope you enjoyed this summary of our week in LDS.
