Learning from Joshua

null
Joshua is one of my favorite characters in the bible, because of his unwavering trust in and obedience to God. We might ask, ‘How can this story of Joshua help us in our lives right now?’ Here are some thoughts from Joshua chapter 1.

In Joshua 1:1 we see that it is after the death of Moses that God commissioned Joshua. But God had been preparing him before that. For a long time he was an assistant to Moses, learning from him, Exodus 17:9-14, 24:13, Exodus 33:11, Numbers 11:28, Numbers 27:18.

In verses 1-5 God commissioned Joshua, promising land and possessions to the people.

1. Into what new territory or area of ministry is God calling you to go this week and how will you respond? Will you respond with willingness and obedience as Joshua did?

In verses 6-9 God encourages Joshua to obedience, promising His presence with Joshua and success for Joshua.

2. God gave Joshua specific promises he could rely on. Which promise of God do you need to take hold of and apply to your life this week? What is the condition, if there is one, for receiving God’s promise?

In verses 10-11 Joshua prepares the people to possess the land God promised.

3. How are you , like Joshua, preparing others in your care, children, Sunday school class etc for what God has for them?

In verses 12-18, echoing God’s words, Joshua promises rest for the people after the land possession.

4. Will you respond as the Reubenites did? ‘Wherever you send us we will go,’ they said. Will you look for where God would send you and be obedient?
