Let’s Make Hair Scrunchies!

You can make cute hair scrunchies to mix and match with every outfit. Your daughter will always have pretty scrunchies, because you can quickly whip up a new one in minutes if you need one. This is also a great chance to teach your daughter(s) to sew.

Start by finding great fabric. I often find pieces that are just big enough to make a scrunchie or two in the remnant bin, and they are priced between ten and fifty cents. Then I pick up a package of one inch wide elastic to go with it, while in the fabric store or notions section of my favorite store. The elastic costs about $1.00 and the package contains 5-10 yards depending on the width. It’s enough to make a bunch of hair accessories.

Also, pick up different colors of thread to match your fabric if you don’t already have a good selection of colors at home or if the fabric you chose is a unique color. Otherwise, just use black for dark fabric and white for light colors.

Cut strips of fabric 12″ long by 3″ wide. For small girls, you can cut them a little smaller, about 8” x 2” and use ½” elastic. Fold the fabric in half, so the good side is facing in, and crease with your iron. Experiment on a scrap of the fabric if it is delicate, and turn the iron to the lowest setting or crease by smoothing with your hand. Sew the long side of the strip closed and turn right side out.

Cut a 6″ long strip of elastic (make it 4” for smaller scrunchies) and feed it threw the tube of fabric. The easiest way is to sew the elastic to one end. Pull it through and sew it to the other end. Next, sew the two ends together and you’re all set.
