Letting People Help

If you are anything like me, you may be getting used to going it alone when it comes to your home business. While some of us are working on building a “family” business and have spouses, children, etc. who are participating in our home-based business, others of us are pretty much running our businesses all on our own. We might actually be pretty isolated and very much a one-person-show. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t and can’t accept some help from others here and there, however…

There might be people in your world who would love to help you with your home business, but they are waiting to be asked or not sure how to approach you. Or, maybe they have already offered to help and you have turned them down because you are determined to build your home business on your own. Your determination is commendable, but no man (or woman) is an island. Infusing our businesses with a little outside energy and effort may be a really good thing.

Even someone like Martha Stewart—who gets credit for building her own multi-billion dollar “cottage industry” from scratch all by herself has and had plenty of help along the way. Of course, we’ve all had help and helpers who weren’t really “helpful” but that doesn’t mean that our businesses can’t benefit from some fresh eyes and fresh blood. If you are worried about having someone come in and try to tell you what to do or change things, you can be very firm about the fact that it is your business and you are in charge.

So, the next time someone offers to stuff envelopes, package products, edit a marketing brochure, or even take your children for the afternoon so you can get some work done—take them up on it. Letting people help can be a very “good thing.”
