Of course the library can be a wealth of frugality, but did you know that there are a few tricks that can help make the library even more of an asset? That is right. You can take a frugal and wonderful thing such as the free library and make it work even more for you. Here is how.
Save on gas and late fees
Most libraries will allow you to renew your books online, over the phone or both. Take advantage of this to save on late fees and the gas you would use for a trip to the library just to renew your books.
You can also reserve wanted books online, over the phone, or both. Again, this saves on a trip to the library. The library will notify you when you book comes in.
Take out the maximum of items that you can use before the end of the renewal. In other words, if you can read one book a week, and you have a three-week return time, take out three books. Or take out six books, knowing that you will renew over the phone or online. This way, you make fewer trips to the library. “Hot” books are usually not renewable. Be considerate if you use this method, of course.
Getting more than just books
Don’t forget other media such as CDs, DVDs, magazines, toys and more are all available to borrow. Instead of buying new toys to keep the kids entertained, take them out. We frequently check out Raffi children’s music CDs to listen to in the car.
Take advantage of downloadable e-books. Some innovative libraries are starting to offer e-books for check out. You can even get the latest in demand books for download. You will have to download software to your computer, and the e-books are set to expire after your borrowing time.
