I don’t know about you, but my preschooler loves games. She has recently discovered board games, but, she is not partial. She will play just about any game that you will engage with her in.
We are lucky enough to live 2 blocks from a grocery store. So, to get some afternoon energy out on a rarely “warm” day here in Salt Lake City, we walked to the grocery store to pick up ingredients for something very important for Valentine’s day. Cupcakes. As we were walking back, my daughter decided that rather than wear her coat, she wanted to put the hood of it over her face, and see how far she could walk. My job in this game was to tell her before she ran into something. She had so much fun doing this simple thing, that it made me think, “Preschoolers would love if all of life was just a game”.
While, we all know that is not possible, we can do some things to make life a little more interesting for them. Now that she isn’t napping either, I have to think of ways that she can stay busy. But, I’ve found, that if I involve her in whatever I’m doing, she’s happy. The key, help them do something that makes them feel like a grown-up.
Make it a game when you go to the grocery store. Just the simple act of putting the groceries in the cart is life altering for my kid. She loves it, and feels so grown up.
When you are in the car, play “I Spy”. This will help with colors, and kill the boredom that so many kids feel when running errands.
Play the, “What am I thinking?” game. My daughter has loved this one since about three years old. You start by saying something like, “I’m thinking of something purple”. She takes a few guesses, and then you give her another clue like, “I’m thinking of something purple and squishy”. Keep going like this until they guess it. The answer can be the most simple thing, like grapes.
Get creative with your preschooler. That’s what they want and need to keep their minds engaged, busy, and interested.
