Life Without a Microwave

As many of you know Mick and I got rid of our microwave some time back as we were concerned about health issues with it. Family members were both astounded and incredulous about how we were going to manage. But then we survived plenty of years before the microwave came into existence and we would never have had one at all if it hadn’t been inherited.

So, how is life going along without a microwave? It’s fine. It just means we need to remember to get meat or anything we need to defrost out beforehand, just the way we used to before the microwave came along. It means we steam vegetables these days, which according to all health professionals is better for you anyway. I just steam all the vegetables in one large saucepan and separate them on the plate.

The other advantage is there is more room on the kitchen bench and that’s got to be an advantage when making and serving up meals for lots of people as we were over the Christmas period.

We’re so used to not having the microwave now, we don’t even think about it. The only little hiccup we encountered was over Christmas when family came to stay. They’re using to heating the baby’s milk in the microwave. I suggested they resort to what we used to before, putting the bottle or cup in a saucepan of boiling water for a moment or two. Family soon adjusted and got used to the change in arrangements while here.

Even though I sent our children the information I discovered, both our adult children have chosen to keep their microwaves. That’s their choice and I make no comment about it. It’s a case of different people with different ideas, about health and the way things should be done that’s all. Sometimes even in the closest family you just have to agree to differ.
