In previous articles on lightening up for spring and summer, window treatments were mentioned. Removing heavy drapes and curtains or simply opening them up and adding sheers were some of the recommended changes but if you would like more ideas, read on.
If you want to let the sunshine in but have concerns regarding privacy, even during certain hours, consider adding blinds, shades, or matchstick shades to close when privacy is needed. When you want to open the windows or simply let more light in, retract the shades or blinds and use lightweight treatments such as sheers, valances, or window scarves that do not block windows.
You might also choose window film or other no-fabric window treatments to block part of a window, keeping people from seeing in while still allowing light to shine through. This is a great idea for a bathroom window.
Some people also like to remove window coverings altogether and simply add a light window topper to hide hardware. You could also add beaded treatments, such as a curtain of beads or handmade strings of beads, which will reflect both color and light.
Café curtains are a nice touch for the kitchen, allowing in lots of light during warmer months, while still retaining some privacy. You can replace them with full curtains again when the weather grows colder. Choose café curtains in a similar color or simply change out some of your kitchen accessories to match your warm weather window treatments. You can often find coordinating kitchen towels, dishcloths, potholders, and placemats that will work perfectly with your curtains.
A sheer window treatment topped with lace panels is also a great way to create a lighter, airier feel while retaining privacy. Another alternative is to layer sheers, even different colors that blend well together, to prevent clear sight while still ushering in light.
