“Liken the Scriptures” is a company that is taking the family entertainment industry by storm. The first time I ever saw a movie produced by Liken, I admit I wasn’t quite sure what to think. Characters from the scriptures doing the Charleston? A little too weird for my tastes. But after I watched the whole movie, my opinion was changed.
The “Liken the Scriptures” movies are created to help children understand the scriptures in a way they never did before, in the hopes that those children will then turn to the scriptures for themselves and read what’s found there for themselves. It’s a common concern for parents that their children don’t enjoy reading the scriptures; often it’s because the words are long, the concepts are difficult to grasp, and the children just can’t get into the story. Liken takes care of all those concerns with their method which is simply to entertain and edify at the same time.
Each episode in the Liken library is written specifically to attract children. The scripture story is brought down to its most basic level, told dramatically, polished up with some humor, and then set to music. By the time the movie is out of production, you have something the whole family can enjoy, relate to, and watch again and again.
Anxious to produce films that any Christian family can enjoy, the company has two series, the Bible series and the Gold series, featuring stories from the Book of Mormon. While the company is LDS, the movies found in the Bible series can be watched and loved by those of any Bible-based religion.
The music is written by Aaron Edson, but with the variety of musical styles represented, you’d swear they had a whole team of writers. No, he really is that versatile. The screenplays are written by Dennis Agle Jr, frequently including witty banter. Together Aaron Edson and Dennis Agle Jr. direct the episodes, and it’s a winning combination.
As I write reviews on each of the movies in the Liken series, you’ll see that this company has a positive, uplifting goal, that of making the scriptures come to life for each of us, indeed, to help us to liken the scriptures unto ourselves. And as far as the characters doing the Charleston, I have to say, that’s now one of my favorite parts.
