Liken the Scriptures: The First Christmas

In this installment of the “Liken the Scriptures” series, we learn about Christmas. As a newly baptized Mormon, Amelia is new to Christianity and is still learning much about the religion. Christmas time is coming and she has her heart set on a new baby doll, one that is just like a real baby. As her parents prepare for the holiday, they tell her about a family in the neighborhood that is struggling financially, and they ask for her cooperation in giving this family a Christmas. Amelia doesn’t know if she really wants to give up some of her gifts to help the other family.

eeIn an effort to help Amelia to understand what Christmas is really about, her parents tell her the story of the first Christmas. Using her imagination, Amelia brings the story to life, and we go right along with her as she sees Mary, Joseph, and the angel Gabriel.

I think this is one of my favorite episodes in the Liken the Scriptures series. Joseph is so tender with Mary. The Angel Gabriel is full of love and goodness. Zacharias and Elizabeth speak very movingly about their desire to have a child. Every element of this story brings tears to my eyes as I contemplate the birth of our Savior and the beautiful circumstances of that glorious event.

In the end, Amelia decides that she wants to help take Christmas to the needy family. Her father hands her a special package and tells her not to give it away. She grins, knowing that it’s the baby doll she wanted. As she tiptoes up to the house to leave the gifts, she feels warm inside, knowing that she’s doing the right thing. She and her father drive away, but then she asks him to go back. She leaves her doll for the family too, knowing that they have a little girl.

When they arrive back home, her mother is waiting with some good news. It seems Amelia will have a baby doll after all – her mother is pregnant.

I encourage you to take time with your family this holiday season to enjoy this beautiful and uplifting DVD.
