Long Hair vs. Short Hair: the Smackdown

I’m a short hair girl. It suits my face (I think), it’s easy to care for, and looks good on short notice. I’m used to it. I’m comfortable with it.

Heck, I even cut my own hair most of the time! With curly hair, if it’s a little uneven, it’s hard to tell. (Things would be a little trickier if I had straight hair.)

But every once in a while, I get the urge to let my hair grow. I can count only two times in my life when my hair has been below shoulder length: once when I was around three (there’s photographic evidence, though I barely remember it) and back in the acting days of my early twenties.

The urge is rising at the moment. My hair is at that precarious stage where it’s ready to be trimmed (the ends are a little crunchy) back to short and sleek status. But then I think about fun hair things I can’t do with short hair, like pigtails and braids and ponytails. I do have nice hair: dark and curly and thick. Maybe I should grow it out and show it off a little.

Longer hair comes with its own set of problems. More tangles, with longer curls. Longer drying time after I shower — I air dry, rather than use a blow dryer. More shampoo and conditioner used, so I’ll go through my bath stuff faster.

And the biggest drawback: I usually end up pulling my hair back anyway, if it’s long. So if I’m going to pull it back, why bother to grow it long in the first place?

Still, the allure of cute little pigtails is strong. Plus, the extra hair would keep the back of my neck warmer while I’m out walking the dogs!

Do you have short hair or long hair? What are your favorite things about the style, and what don’t you like? Your advice might help me decide.
