Look at That Cat Grass Grow!

In a recent article, I wrote about how I bought a couple cat grass kits that my mom had pointed out to me. One was for their drinking fountain, the other was a freestanding Kitty Garden.

The Aqua Garden

The Drinkwell Aqua Garden Pet Grass really surprised me. It’s just a little blue container that clips to the side of the Drinkwell fountain. There’s no soil, just seeds.

“Grass is really going to grow in here?” I wondered doubtfully.

Oh man, did it! The directions specified a trim of the roots might be needed, but I actually had to cut the grass a couple of times too. It just grew so well. And so fast.

“What the heck have you got going on in there?” Wayne asked when he started noticing how much it had grown. “Is that legal? Do I need to be worried about an illegal catnip operation going on here?”

Neither of us expected the jungle that sprung up in the fountain from an unsuspecting little pod of soilless seeds. It was quite fun to experiment with!

Kitty’s Garden

This one also grew surprisingly well. The “planter box” appealed to me because it wasn’t just a round plastic container like so many of them are. It had some personality.

Also, I enjoy gardening and planting things so it was fun to put the seeds in the soil myself. Wasn’t sure they’d grow but…

You can see from the above photo it did. Like with the Aqua Garden, those sprouts shot up in mere days. (The kit said to expect growth in four to six days, but for sure it was not more than four before I noticed growth.)

Another thing I liked about this one is it has a liner to catch water draining from the liner you plant the seeds in. That way water won’t wreck the container and you can reuse it.

The Real Test: The Cats

Did the cats like the grass? I did see them nibbling on the Aqua Garden variety. I was so curious to see which type of cat grass they’d enjoy most from the Kitty’s Garden (there were four types of grass: oats, wheat, rye, and barley), but I don’t think except to sniff it they’ve taken one taste.

Neither has Murphy, who also enjoys grass. I put it on the floor so he could munch if he wanted, but so far no takers.

Oh well. Perhaps I enjoyed the kits more than they did. It was neat to look at that cat grass grow!
