Looking at Mary

What did God see in such a young lady that she of all women would be chosen to carry the Christ child? I’ve wondered this question for so long. Now with Christmas approaching, I thought this would be a good time to look to the Bible and read what it has to say about Mary.

Through study, I’ve learned that Mary was believed to be a young teen when she conceived by way of the Holy Spirit. She was betrothed (engaged to be married) to Joseph, her first cousin (not uncommon for the time for first cousins to marry).

The following are some key things the Book of Luke has to say about Mary:

  • She found great favor with God (1:28 and 1:30)
  • Was excepting of God’s will with faith (1:38 and 1:45)
  • She was a humble young woman (1:48)

Just a young virgin awaiting marriage, I can’t imagine what it must have been like to receive the news of being chosen to carry the Son of God! On top of that, having to do so while not officially married to her husband Joseph, I just can’t imagine what the neighbors may have been saying about her. Though according to the Bible, Mary doesn’t appear to be in any panic, but fully trusting God and finding great honor in her position.

Being a woman who appears Biblically to be of humble character, I have a hard time seeing Mary condoning the praise and glory she receives from many believers. We’re given examples in the Bible of Mary glorifying God. This is what we are called to do as well. There are no references I have found in the Bible that condone prayer and glory to any other than God.

In looking at the life of Mary I see her as a humble servant open to the will of God. I believe her to be a fine example of a Godly woman, trusting the Lord will make a way through an amazing event.

Have a Merry and Blessed Christmas!
