Some people despise going to the dentist, while others can’t stand the thought of standing in long lines at the DMV. For my mom, nothing ruins her day more than having to pose for a family picture. The woman can’t stand being in front of the camera, and it shows. If a picture speaks a thousand words, then the images my mom reluctantly appears in clearly shout: “I don’t want to be here.”
If you are as camera-shy as my mom, you might find the following tips helpful for those times when you are forced to smile on cue:
Lips: A minute or so before the photographer points and shoots, tap your finger firmly on your lips a few times. This will send blood to your lips making them redder, fuller and prettier in pictures.
Eyes: Instead of looking straight ahead, peer up slightly towards the camera. Doing so will make your eyes appear larger. Also, raise your eyebrows to create an illusion that your eyes are bigger and you’re more alert. Next, close your eyes and then open them quickly before the photo is snapped. For example, if your photographer is counting to three before pressing the camera’s shutter button, blink deliberately on two. This will guarantee that your eyes are not closed during the picture. More importantly, you will look much better in the photo with bright eyes.
Neck and chin: By slightly protruding your chin you can instantly look as though you took off five pounds. Another trick is to lean your neck a bit towards the camera to give your face a more flattering appearance and eliminate a double chin.
Cheeks: Gently pinch your cheeks a few times to get a rosy glow before you pose for a picture.
Teeth: A rigid jaw and clenched teeth don’t look good in photos. Relax and go with the flow. Even if you don’t like posing for photos, it’s better to smile and get it over with than to frown and ruin the entire shot.
