There are many women who would prefer not to squeeze their bloated bodies into a white wedding dress and walk down a church aisle with swollen ankles during their seventh month of pregnancy.
Which is why most brides wait until after the wedding to procreate.
Or they do what Rachael Savory did—-wait until they give birth, and then tie the knot.
Only in Rachael’s case she didn’t head to the church with her fiance, Jay Wong immediately after giving birth to the couple’s first child. Rather, the British mom waited 22 months after popping out her 10th child to say, “I do.”
Rachael and Jay are parents to 10 children ranging in age from a nearly 2-year-old to 14-year-old twins… and they are now officially husband and wife.
So what took them so long to make things legal?
The 35-year-old mother says she didn’t want to look like a pregnant hippo on her wedding day, so she just kept pushing back the date.
Rachael claims that she intended to get hitched shortly after her twin daughters were born, but she got pregnant again… and again… and again… and again… and again… and again…
The pair’s third daughter, Robyn was born in February 1998 followed by Molly, in January 1999. A fifth daughter, Tyler, arrived in September 2000 at which point the couple made plans to finally tie the knot, but plans changed again when the parents decided they would rather try for a son than plan a wedding.
Son Kai joined the family in 2002, but as Rachael explains, “We didn’t want him to be outnumbered by the girls, so we put the wedding off again to try for a baby brother for Kai.”
Son Cody was born in June 2004 followed by a third boy, Logan in May 2005.
At the end of 2005 Rachael was ready to have her dream wedding, but the big event was put on hold yet again when the fertile mom found out she was pregnant with daughter Izabella, who was born in September 2006.
Wedding plans were scrapped again in early 2007 when Rachael discovered she was pregnant with her 10th child. Riley was born in October 2007 and Jay got a vasectomy, so Rachael’s dream of having a fairy tale wedding could finally come true.
The busy mom dropped four dress sizes (from 20 to 12) to fit into her strapless white (yes, white) wedding dress.
The couple’s children rounded out the wedding party serving as bridesmaids and groomsmen… and from all accounts the story has a happy ending (at least for now): Rachael got her dream nuptials without having to look like a “hippo” in her wedding pictures and the children got to witness their parents’ making their union legal. Though as the couple’s neighbor pointedly observed: “A wedding ceremony doesn’t make any of Rachael and Jay’s children legitimate since they were conceived out of wedlock.”
Somehow I doubt that comment mattered much to Rachael. Heck, the woman waited 12 years to get hitched and her biggest concern was how she looked in her wedding dress. Do you really think she cares whether or not her kids are legitimate? If she did she would have put together a quickie wedding prior to conceiving her eight other children.
Legal, schmegal. For Rachael it was all about the dress.
Does that make her a bad parent?
