Love Under The Arches

The English language is constantly being influenced by popular culture. (Did you know “Bootylicious” is being added to the dictionary?) Which is why I am not surprised that the “Mc” prefix derived from McDonalds has become an integrate part of pop culture. And, I suppose it’s the reason I am not surprised that someone coined the phrase, “McLove Story.”

What’s a “McLove Story,” you ask? A couple from North Dakota may have the answer. They got married on Valentine’s Day (that’s the love part) under the golden arches (hence the “Mc” part). It’s true. With news reporters looking on, Lori and Craig Sager ditched the red heart décor and opted for a backdrop of Big Macs and Quarter Pounders at a McDonald’s in Bismarck.

The couple told reporters the fast food restaurant “seemed like just the right place” since they had been meeting there for lunch every Tuesday for more than a year.

Craig Sager said when he first suggested getting hitched at McDonald’s he meant it as a joke. But his new bride liked the idea and went with it. No word on whether the reception was catered by Ronald and friends.

While the Sager’s were tying the knot under the golden arches, more than 100 couples were exchanging wedding vows under a giant silver arch. Dozens of couples braved the cold on Valentine’s Day to get married under St. Louis’ landmark Gateway Arch. And, despite the snowdrifts and below zero wind chills, many of the brides donned strapless wedding gowns and open-toed shoes.

One bride told local reporters that she wore strappy sandals to show off her French pedicure. “They were cute and they matched the dress,” she said. “You’ve got to look good, no matter how cold it is.”

The wedding was sponsored by a local country music radio station and was billed as the largest in St. Louis history. Family and friends circled the couples to help block the strong winds that were whipping off of the Mississippi River. Other spectators watched from the steps of the Arch just across the street.

Now that’s a Valentine’s Day to remember.
