Loving the Luau

Party City has slashed prices on all of its Hawaiian-themed items. Right now you can scoop up everything you need to host a backyard luau for 50 percent off regular prices. The half-off sale couldn’t have come at a better time, considering my daughter’s Girl Scout troop is planning its own tropical bash at the end of the month.

I’m not sure what the group’s party budget is, but the Party City discount is quite substantial. Of course, you can easily find other ways to create luau decorations and accessories without leaving your home. For example, if you are short on cash, but you don’t mind exercising your crafting muscles, then consider making paper hula skirts for your party guests.

All you have to do is cut a large piece of green yarn to fit around each guest’s waist. Next, have your guests cut long strips of green construction paper. Once the strips are done, fold the paper over the top of the yarn and staple. Continue stapling until you have created a full skirt. Finally, take the scissors and split each piece of “grass” into smaller pieces to make the skirt look fuller.

Kids and grown-ups alike will have a ball making a luau-inspired seashell frame. Simply pick-up a dozen or so cheap, plastic or wooden picture frames. Then, have your guests glue shells around the frame. This affordable activity is a cinch to make and will last quite a while provided no one tries t pick off the shells.

Last, but not least, sand art. The incredibly simple craft is perfect for kids attending a luau. You can either fill bottles with multiple colors of sand and use them as centerpeices or sprinkle the sand on butcher paper and use it as a backdrop for tropical floral arrangements made from orchids and Hawaii’s state flower, the Hibiscus.
