Low Cholesterol Sandwiches

High cholesterol runs in my family. Since I want to avoid cholesterol medications if at all possible I seek out recipes that are good for cholesterol. It is not that hard to stick to a low cholesterol diet if you have the tools and know which foods to eat.

A great lunch is a sandwich with avocado and lean turkey or chicken. Simply slice your avocado and place it on whole grain bread with lettuce, tomato, onions, lean turkey or chicken and a dab of salsa for some zing. Simple, healthy and delicious! How much easier and better can it get? You can also add on alfalfa sprouts, green peppers, pickles or whatever vegetable you desire. If you sauté peppers and onions in olive oil to add to your sandwich, you will get the added benefit of olive oil which helps lower cholesterol. Have the sandwich with a side of nuts or substitute the turkey for salmon or tuna and your lunch will be geared directly to lowering cholesterol. Not only that, it will be delicious and satisfying.

Another sandwich idea that is heart healthy is a Greek style sandwich. Have you seen the flat deli round breads in the stores? Pepperidge Farms is a brand that carries this type of bread. Choose a whole wheat or grain bread to get started. Add on hummus, diced red pepper, sliced cucumber, crumbled feta cheese (reduced fat) and lettuce. This sandwich is tasty and satisfying. Perhaps you want to trade the hummus for tabouli. Feel free to replace the feta with blue cheese if you prefer. Add on sliced olives or tomatoes. Get creative!

With some innovation you can create a healthy sandwich that is heart friendly and taste friendly. I could eat hummus and feta every day! I also love avocados. I am not the biggest fan of bread so I enjoy the flat breads the most. Think of some fun sandwiches for your next lunch.
