Find great ways to have fun as a family without spending a lot of money.
Here are some ideas:
Have a Potluck Party
Invite friends or neighbors over and ask each person to bring something to eat or drink. Organize who is bringing what so no one else brings what you are making, and so everyone doesn’t bring the same thing. You don’t want five bags of pretzels and no beverages. You can even ask someone to bring paper plates, cups, or napkins. Since each family is only responsible for one item, it won’t cost anyone much money, but everyone will have a good time. Also, ask friends to bring CD’s so you’ll have a nice mix of music, and ask each family to bring a game or two.
Slumber Party
Have you ever had a family slumber party? It’s great. Every member of the family drags pillows and blankets into the living room or family room and piles up in the middle of the floor. Pop some popcorn or prepare a favorite snack, and rent a bunch of movies. Older movies cost very little to rent, so make it a movie marathon. Pull out board games, tell stories, or sing camp songs. Turn on some music and dance. Be silly, relax, and have fun.
Mini Vacation
What’s that? You can’t afford a vacation this year? How about a mini vacation? If there is a state or national park near your home, or even a forest preserve for that matter, you can spend the entire day hiking, picnicking, playing ball, and just goofing around with your kids. You can come home that night and return early the next morning if your family is up for it. Spending nearly the entire weekend away from home is a great way to get a change of scenery and feel refreshed. It’s almost as good as a “real” vacation but much less costly.
