Ditch the oars. Forget about the ferry. If you have the means to travel in style you may want to take advantage of a handful of ultra-expensive cruises that set sail just a few times a year. Oh, and if you think these luxury trips travel the high seas to the typical cruise locations, think again. Never mind the Caribbean or the Bahamas, these high priced voyages tend to go the Baltic, which is a region with a relatively short cruising season.
So how much will one of these trips set you back? A seven-night cruise aboard the 382-passenger Silver Shadow out of Copenhagen (departing next week) is going for $890 per person a day, and that’s for the lowest category suite — an ultra-luxe 287-square-foot cabin with a marble bathroom, walk-in closet and private veranda.
In addition to high seas adventures in the Baltic, Alaska cruises and those headed to Dubai are also expensive. Then there are the cruises to Antarctica, those sailings are generally offered between December and February only, which means you’ll be forking over top dollar for the chance to climb aboard.
For example, the Lindblad Expedition’s 23-night Antarctica cruise, which sets sail next February is charging just over $650 per person a day. And what do you get for that kind of money? Cruise experts say the timing of the cruise practically guarantees great weather and calm seas. In addition, the length of the cruise also plays a role in the price. And don’t forget the expenses, they also play a part in setting cruise fares. For example, sailing to Tahiti and Antarctica is not cheap because everything has to be imported, particularly fuel.
Still, if you can afford it (or at least figure out a way to save up for it), cruise experts say traveling to more exotic locations in vessels that provide more individual attention is a once in a lifetime experience that you simply can’t put a price tag on. (And if you do, expect it to be steep.)
