First it was Justin Timberlake… now it’s Madonna. The Material Girl has reinvented herself yet again. This time it’s all about fashion. Not so much for herself, but for her adoring fans.
Late last year the singer turned actress turned advocate signed on with Swedish fashion retailer H&M to launch a collection of “hip, glamorous and timeless” pieces. Her second and last collection recently hit stores and the items are a hit. At least that’s what the executives at H&M are maintaining.
I finally caved in and decided to take a look at the collection myself. The Madonna line consists of a 30-piece selection of body conscious basics with narrow silhouettes, mostly in black, white and khaki (I guess you can’t go wrong with primary colors). The line includes trench coats in nylon or leather, skinny black pants, cropped jackets, bodysuits and wrap sweaters.
In addition to the clothing line, M by Madonna also features a variety of accessories, including a corset belt, patent leather stacked heels and a jewel box purse in silver or black leather.
H&M designers say Madonna “went through her closet and picked out a few staples that she felt should be in every closet.” (I’m glad she didn’t pick her cone shaped bra and bodysuit to share with the world.) Among the most popular items, according to store managers, are the “M” logo print scarves and corset belts. I’m sure price played a role in it being so popular. The scarves are priced under $50, and they are basically the equivalent of a concert t-shirt (and since they have the “M” logo I’m sure they will resell well on eBay, especially since there aren’t very many H&M stores located in the United States.)
H&M also raffled off 90 trench coats signed by Madonna to promote the launch.
Madonna the fashion designer… hmmm… Would you buy any items from her collection?
