My daughter turns eight this year.
Eight.
How did that happen?
She has big plans for her big day, and I have equally daunting decisions to make as I craft her birthday scrapbook.
For the past five years I have always added a birthday poem to a layout. When I first started the tradition, I penned my own prose. However, as she aged, so did I, and my creativity took a hit in the process. For the past couple of years, I’ve turned to the Internet and books to find a short but sweet poem expressing my pride in her turning a year older.
To commemorate her sixth birthday I used this:
Celebrating Six
It’s not every day that you get to turn six
We’ll light your candles; you blow out the wicks.
Everyone’s gathered to sing your birthday song,
You’ll be opening your presents before too long.
So enjoy all the attention that’s coming your way,
It’ll be another year before you see your next birthday!
Then, last year I added this to a layout of filled with photos of her opening her birthday presents:
Seven Years Ago
Seven years ago today,
The stork brought a precious gift our way.
And so today we bring gifts to you
To show you how much you’re loved through and through.
Someone suggested I use the following poem in this year’s memory album, but she doesn’t like princesses, so I doubt it will make the cut:
Today You Are Eight
Doesn’t it feel great to be eight?
You’re birthday is here and there’s no more wait.
You get to be a prince/princess for an entire day,
So rule with good cheer and have a happy birthday!
If you prefer to add a more generic birthday poem to your book, you could use this:
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday to you,
On this your special day.
We’re so glad to share it with you,
To bring gifts, eat cake and play.
We hope you have a great time,
And that all your wishes come true.
Because we don’t know anyone who deserves
A happier birthday than you!
The selection could be used for a variety of individuals despite their age. In addition you could substitute some of the words or personalize it by adding the birthday boy or girl’s name in there, or even some of his or her favorite items. For example, the line that reads: “To bring gifts, eat cake and play,” could be changed to “To bring video games, eat brownies and play.”
The idea is to make the page design special for your loved one, so flex your creative muscle and put your own spin on birthday-themed poems.
