Major Changes in Store for This Year’s People’s Choice Awards

If you haven’t noticed how the ongoing Hollywood writers strike has affected various TV shows then you will definitely be in for a shock when you tune into this year’s People’s Choice Awards.

The ceremony, which typically airs live, will be far from it during the January 8th telecast. According to show producers, the only thing that hasn’t changed to accommodate the work stoppage is that Queen Latifah, who previously was announced as host, will still be part of the new format.

The show will go on, but not in a way that any of us has ever seen before.

First of all, the awards show will include pre-recorded acceptance speeches by winners. Meaning you can forget about seeing any nail-biting split screen shots of actors waiting to see if their names will be called. Show producers are trying to temper the loss of spontaneity by adding a segment where the winners respond to questions sent in by fans.

The “new approach will give fans a more personal glimpse into the lives of their favorite actors and musicians,” the awards president said in a statement.

By answering a single prerecorded question by a fan?

Hmm… personally, I get more of a personal glimpse of my favorite stars when I see authentic reactions on their faces when their names are not called.

The Writers Guild of America has been on strike for seven weeks and earlier this week the group announced it will not allow its members to participate in the Golden Globes on January 13th nor the Academy Awards on February 24th.

In addition to banning its members from writing for the awards shows, the guild also announced that it is denying the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the use of clips from movies and past awards programs that are typically shown during the annual movie award show.

Another problem facing all of the awards shows, is the question of whether celebrities showing firm support for striking writers (meaning star presenters or even nominees) would show up for an awards show boycotted by writers.
