Here are some ideas that older kids might find cool. Start with a plain box such as a cookie tin or cardboard pencil box. Rip small strips of masking tape and attach them all over the container, overlapping each piece, until the entire box or tin is covered. You can do the inside too if desired. You can also use this process on glass bowls, jars, bottles, or vases
When you have covered the tin or other container to your satisfaction, rub on brown stain or shoe polish with a clean rag. Rub it in real good and wipe away any excess with a separate clean rag.
After the stain or shoe polish has a chance to dry, apply clear stain or even clear spray paint as a protective coating. The effect will be that of aged leather. This project makes a cool addition to any space in the home and also makes a great gift.
Another great way to get the look of leather is by using torn strips of paper. If you use plain paper, you will have to age it afterwards with stain or shoe polish. On the other hand, you can use brown paper, such as old grocery bags. Crinkling them up first adds to the aged effect.
Mix two parts glue with one part water and use a paintbrush to paint each strip of paper front and back. Apply to the item you wish to decorate, and add a bit more of the glue mixture if necessary. The paper should be saturated.
Be sure all the torn strips overlap each other as you apply them. This will create a nice texture and insure that no bare spots are showing. You can apply a finish coat of the glue mixture over the finished piece for protection.
