Would you like to transform a space in your home to give it more of a formal feel? There are many ways to bring formality to a space without starting all over.
Try these ideas:
Add Layers
Add more layers with rich fabric. Start by adding sheers beneath existing curtains then add a valance to top off each set of window treatments. You’ll need to add extra curtain rods for the sheers but they are inexpensive and simple to install. For valances, instead of using typical curtain rods add decorative ones.
Adding a throw is a good way to bring in another layer of rich fabric. You can save money by making it yourself. It does not have to be made from chenille or other materials that are commonly used for throws. A piece of raw silk with a simple hemmed edge and some gorgeous trim will make an elegant accent.
Formal Family Portrait
Get your family dressed to the nines and have a family portrait taken. You can save money by having the portrait made at a department store photo studio or by having a family member or friend snap pictures with a digital camera until you find one you like. Have the photo enlarged and made into an oil painting at My Davinci, or hire a local artist.
Next, look for a formal picture frame with a traditional feel and plenty of intricate detailing. A rich tone of stain will make it feel more elegant. You can often find beautiful frames at antique shops and estate sales. To save even more money, look for a frame at a garage sale or thrift store that you can refinish yourself.
On the other hand, you might not mind splurging on a frame since this is a special piece. In that case you might want to have a custom frame made by a professional for your family portrait.
