Make a Theme Book

Does your child have a favorite sport, hobby, character, or movie? Whatever your child’s interests, you can help him or her create a book to collect images, stories, and other clips related to that interest.

Cut a standard size piece of poster board in half. Fold both pieces in half in the shape of a book. Do the same with another sheet of poster board. Place the extra pieces inside one piece. Punch holes near the crease, making sure the hole goes through each piece of poster board (separate the pieces if necessary and mark the proper placement for holes).

Thread yarn or twine through the holes and tie at the top. This will be the binding for your book. Have your child decorate the front and back covers. They can be painted or covered with construction paper or fabric. Add a picture of the theme and frame it with decorative trim or contrasting paper.

Inside, your child can draw pictures related to the theme. You can help your child find pictures in magazines, coloring books, and newspapers, to cut out and glue inside the theme book. You can also help your child take pictures with your camera and paste those to some of the pages. If your child is making a sports book, a picture of him or her in uniform, with other team members, making a great play, or holding a trophy would be perfect. Die-cut images for scrapbooking will also work well.

Help your child label certain images or document dates for the big game or event. You can use letter decals, stencils, or your child can write words, dates, or messages. Your child can also cut words or letters from magazine pages and glue them on.

This project is fun to make and it’s a great way to capture memories. You and your child will enjoy looking at the theme book for years to come.
