Bookmarks are super easy to make, but they are still fun, and they are handy to have around. Making a really cool bookmark may even help encourage your child to read more often so that he or she can use it!
Cardstock or poster board will work better than paper, or you can even use thin pieces of craft foam if you like. Cut whichever material you decide to use into strips. For kids making larger than average bookmarks is probably a good idea. Not only are they easier to keep track of but they also give your kids more area to decorate, so they will have more fun making them and they will be able to include more of the things they like in the design.
Bookmarks also make great gifts for Father’s Day, birthdays, holidays, or other special occasions (which means that you may need to repeat this project often).
You and your kids can make simple bookmarkers by painting, drawing, or personalizing them. You can also cut a strip of poster board for the base of the bookmark then glue on strips of colored paper or light ribbon or fabric.
For added interest, adults can cut shapes and designs through the material with a penknife. As an alternative to a straight, rectangular shaped bookmark, cut the ends of the sides with pinking shears or scrapbook scissors. If you don’t have any of these tools, cut out your own designs along the edges, or just cut the bookmark out in an unusual shape.
Other fun ideas include gluing on trim or lace or adding pictures. Make copies of photos and glue them to the bookmarks. Another option is cutting out cool pictures from magazines.
To make sure the bookmark stays in place well, glue a large paperclip onto the back.
