Make Dad a Barbeque Apron

Does your dad love to cook on the grill? If he does, you can make him a cool barbeque apron to wear when he cooks on the grill. You can find plain aprons at craft stores or a super center, and they are available in tan or white canvas or denim.

To customize the apron, decorate it with images you think Dad will like. You can use fabric paints or paint pens to draw fun shapes and pictures. You might want to draw a picture of the grill and some grilling utensils, or you might want to draw foods like hamburgers, hot dogs, or a big, juicy, steak.

You can also make three-dimensional images from felt or other fabric and glue them on with washable fabric glue. Pick up all different colors of felt so you can make lots of different items. Make a huge hamburger with all the trimmings, cutting the bun from tan felt, the burger patty from dark brown or black, and making lettuce from green. Use orange for cheese, white for an onion slice, and red for a thick slice of tomato.

Cut a hot dog bun from tan felt and a hot dog from red. Glue on squiggly pieces of red and yellow yarn to look like ketchup and mustard. You can also make three-dimensional cooking utensils the same way. Draw utensil shapes on gray felt and make black handles, or use brown to look like wooden handles.

Another fun idea is to take a picture of Dad when he’s grilling sometime and then print that picture onto iron-on transfer paper with your computer. An adult can help children iron the transfer onto the apron. If you don’t have a shot of dad grilling, use any favorite photo.

Pick up a nice set of grill utensils to go with the apron, and you’ll have the perfect Father’s Day gift for the king of the grill!
