Make Graduation Fun

Graduation Parties ideas

In a previous blog I listed some fun ways you can make a homemade kindergarten graduation one your child will remember long after his cap has been tossed into the air. My 6-year-old happened to be standing next to me as I wrote the post and is now insisting that I throw her a first grade graduation party.

It’s actually not a bad idea, though, like her kindergarten celebration it would require a bit of planning, but perhaps not as much pomp and circumstance.

“So, what does one do at a first grade commencement, besides eat cake?”

“Open presents!” my daughter cried out without missing a beat.

Why didn’t I see that coming?

If I were to throw my daughter a first grade graduation party I would include the following:

Games: Can’t have a party without games. For this celebration I would stick with more educational games, like Hangman or flash card math.

Speeches: What a perfect time to hone your child’s public speaking skills. I would have my daughter get up and speak about the highlights of her year. Or you can make it even more fun by writing several topics on folded pieces of paper and placing them in a bowl, then have your child draw out a slip and give a short talk about the subject.

Treasure Hunt: Hide items around the house and write clues that your child (or children; this is a game the entire family can play) has to decipher in order to find the prizes.

Unique Autograph Sheets: One of the highlights of the school year is having an autograph party whereby students get their friends and teachers to sign their yearbooks. Instead of using a boring book, have your child lie on a large sheet of paper while you outline his body with a marker. Then, let your kid decorate the outline making sure he leaves space so that guests can sign it and leave him written well wishes as they enter the graduation ceremony.
