If you have kids, then you know that getting them to study is not always a walk in the park. However, a sunny stroll in a national park could put learning in a whole new light. The same could be said for any educational destination that promotes hands-on learning. If you are looking for ways to make learning fun for your reluctant student, consider visiting:
Independence Hall: A trip to Pennsylvania is not complete without a pit stop at Independence Hall where kids can learn about America’s founding fathers in a unique tour. Philadelphia’s Ghost Tour is a fun and educational 90-minute, candle-lit stroll that visits Independence Hall, where the Constitution was adopted; winds around Powel House, which hosted George and Martha Washington’s 20th wedding anniversary celebration; and stops at the historic City Tavern, a favorite of John Adams.
Ellis Island: If you are Big Apple bound, then make time for an educational visit to Ellis Island. The landmark was the entry point for more than 17 million immigrants between 1892 and 1924. Today, you can conduct research at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum to see if your ancestors passed through the port. The museum is home to millions of records which detail the date immigrants arrived and what ship they sailed on to reach New York. While there you can also view the progress being made on the new Peopling of America Center, which is slated to open in 2012. The $20 million facility celebrates U.S. immigration from 1955 to the present, and features interactive exhibits, such as touch screen monitors that illustrate demographic changes in American cities over time.
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve: You know that it’s going to be a good time when the National Park Service calls your Idaho educational destination, “the only officially weird park” in the country. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is anything but boring. The space is home to a 618-square-mile lava field, which mimics the rocky surface of the moon, plus various lava tubes. Don’t miss exploring Indian Tunnel which measures 30 feet high and 50 feet wide.
