If you are a recreational runner looking to kick up your workouts a few notches, I highly recommend running a marathon. I know; it may sound crazy at first, but if you are logging the miles anyway, you might as well put all that hard work to good use. That was the rationale I employed while training for my first marathon.
If you are serious about running, road races can give you added incentive to train. What’s more, marathons can be fun, if you find ones that offer great views of spectacular cities. I reviewed a few of my favorites in my previous blog, now here’s a few more to add to the list:
PHILADELPHIA MARATHON
This race gives you ultimate access to the city’s top attractions. The marathon starts and finishes at the Philadelphia Art Museum (home of the “Rocky steps”), and in between it weaves by City Hall, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall before winding along the Schuylkill River and Boathouse Row. The phenomenal sights will take your mind off of the pain you might be experiencing mid-race.
VERMONT CITY MARATHON
The race takes place in the laid-back college town of Burlington. Bonuses of this marathon include breathtaking views of Lake Champlain and the city’s charming neighborhoods. Plus, you get to experience the unforgettable sight of thousands of spectators dressed in tie-dye shirts jamming to the Grateful Dead. Another memorable moment: At mile 15, there’s a hill lined with drummers playing to get the runners pumped.
ROCK AND ROLL ARIZONA MARATHON
This winter race takes runners through the picturesque cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe, which are surrounded by awe-inspiring mountain ranges. Fortunately, you don’t have to run the mountains; they’re just there to enhance the marathon. Runners also pass spectacular resorts like the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. The hotel is also a popular post race venue, with participants paying big bucks for ultra-luxe massages and mud baths.
