Most kids enjoy working on craft projects not only because it is fun to do but also because they get the opportunity to be creative. What makes crafts even more enjoyable is making things that others will actually display or use.
You and your kids can make great coasters for your home, with designs that coordinate with your décor as well as coming up with other designs for holidays and special occasions.
One simple style of coasters can be made from wide-mouth jar lids. Clean and dry the lids and trace them onto felt. Cut out the felt and glue it to the bottom. You can use felt inside as well, following the same process (you might have to trim it down a bit to make it fit).
Another option besides felt is terrycloth. Pick up a couple of inexpensive hand towels or even washcloths in the colors of your choice. Trace lids onto terrycloth and proceed as directed. Using absorbent fabrics will help collect condensation from drink glasses.
If you prefer, you can simply set the fabric inside the lids instead of gluing in place. This way, you can easily remove the fabric for hand washing as needed, if you prefer this option to making new coasters.
You can also paint the side edges of the lids (plastic lids are best and they are deeper), or you can glue beads, trims, or lace on to decorate. These items can be glued directly onto the side edges, or flat lace or trim can skirt the edge and fan out around the coaster.
Try autumn colors for Thanksgiving, green and red for Christmas, gold or silver for New Year’s, and pastels for Easter. You can change coasters with the seasons, or make up extra sets for occasions when you will be entertaining guests.
