When we purchase products, it is hard to be environmentally friendly. This is because packaging combined with the energy cost of shipping the product and storing the product can use up valuable resources.
When you make your own products, your are saving on these types of environmental impact issues. In many cases, you are actually recycling or repurposing as well.
There are all sorts of things that you can make on your own. Here are some of the more fun items that will also reduce your environmental impact.
Make your own soda. You can purchase a home carbonator or soda maker. With it, concentrated syrup and CO2 cartridges turn into your favorite concoctions. What new soda flavors will you invent?
Make your own bread. There is almost nothing that beats the smell of fresh homemade bread in your home. My mouth is watering at the thought. Flour comes in paper sacks that can be recycled, and there isn’t much more you need beside yeast and other basic ingredients. Purchase an inexpensive bread machine from a yard sale or thrift store, or make the bread by hand.
Make your own toys. Did you know that there are many homemade versions of popular toys? For example, you can mix up your own form of play-doh right in your kitchen. Also try sock monkeys and puppets, wooden blocks, paper dolls from recycled materials, building blocks from stackable baby wipe containers, etc. Also consider gathering common objects such as paper towel tubes, boxes, buttons, paper scraps, egg cartons and other items that can be crafted into something fun by an inventive child. For adults, try your hand at making your own personalized board game. You can often find incomplete board games at thrift stores or yard sales. Take the pieces and invent something new.
