My six month old is like your typical six month old. He loves (or is obsessed with) anything crinkly. Yes, I have been known to entertain him by throwing a plastic shopping bag his way (under intense supervision, of course) so that he will be happy. I’m afraid though, that I’m creating a monster! Today, when I was putting away the groceries, he was lunging at the counter while in my arms. I realized he was lunging for my grocery sacks sitting on the counter. Oops!
He also loves plastic in any form, really. If it crinkles, he is entertained forever. Why is this? I don’t have the answer, but I wish I did. One of life’s mysteries I guess. But, did you know that you could easily make your own, safe crinkle toys for your baby’s delight? Much better than a plastic bag, for sure!
There is a material that you can probably buy at most craft stores that is called, get this: crinkle material. Go here to see. Now, I do not sew, but if you do, the sky is the limit to what you can create with this crinkle paper. I found a few ideas recently that I thought I’d share.
Crinkle Bots– I love this tutorial because instead of buying the crinkly material, they stuck in a part of a huggies wipes package (also another favorite of my little guy). Genius.
If you don’t sew, like me, check out this tutorial. A simple square with some taggies. Now, that is something I might be able to pull off!
And, this next idea gets even cuter! Try having your older kids help you make a toy for your baby. I know my two older kids would love this. Go here for the link. This idea could help your older kids share in the excitement of having a new baby brother or sister! Or, just something to do on a rainy afternoon.
I’m always looking for ways to save money, and finding these tutorials on making safer crinkle toys for my baby that loves all things crinkly was right up my alley. Can’t wait to try to make the square! What are you going to make?
