Did you know that you can make your own homemade chocolate syrup, pancake or muffin mix and instant pudding and instant oatmeal packets?
It is true and can save you a lot of money in the kitchen. Plus when you know how to make your own, you won’t have to run out to the store to replace something when the need arises. Just keep your staples stocked and then whip up the item yourself. You can make most of these items ahead of time, such as on a weekend or when you have yet another snow day.
Pancake Mix/Cookie Mix/Brownie Mix
Just mix up all of the dry ingredients from your favorite recipe and store in an air tight container. For convenience, note the extra wet ingredients that you will need right there on the container. The next time you need a quick breakfast or snack, you’ll get the convenience of a mix without the cost.
Instant Oatmeal
Those instant oatmeal packets have got to me one of the biggest scams out there. All you have to do is to take regular oatmeal and grind it a bit in the food processor. Add in a bit of salt and whatever flavoring you like, such as brown sugar, dried fruit, cinnamon, etc. Separate out about a cup of the oatmeal into individual bags (or just store it in bulk and scoop as needed) and prepare by adding hot water or milk.
Chocolate Syrup
Mm, chocolate syrup. It can be drizzled over ice cream or waffles or used to make my kids favorite chocolate milk. But with prices anywhere from $2 for generic to $4 for name brand chocolate syrup, making your own will save quite a bit of money.
Simply combine cocoa powder, sugar, salt, water and vanilla with a quick boil on the stove. There are a number of different recipes out there on the Internet to try.
