Make Your Own Mouse Ears?

Seriously? It’s an inescapable part of modern life that we recycle that which is old and classic and turn it into something new and modern. Disney is not the first company and certainly not the last to recycle the past for a new generation. They did it with Herbie, with Flubber, Dr. Doolittle, and while they may not remake their Disney classics, that hasn’t stopped them from creating straight-to-DVD sequels that refresh the past by generating present day interest.

So what are they up to now? A souvenir store in Mickey’s Toontown Disneyland in California is going to start selling “Create Your Own” mouse ears this month (May 20th). On your next trip to Disneyland Anaheim, you’ll be able to create your own ears based on 19 different sets of appliqués. The themes include pirates, holidays, princesses, birthdays, honeymoon, High School Musical, Hannah Montana and most of the Disney Characters. You can mix and match how you please and you can deck the ears out with everything from fur to faux gems.

Sigh.

I know my kiddo and many others would enjoy this new feature, but I just can’t get excited about it. The mouse ears are classic and they date back to the original Mickey Mouse Club television show of the 1950s. These customizable ears actually went on sale in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in March. The price starts around $9.95 and each add-on generates additional cost.

I am probably just being old fashioned, but I think some things are classic because they don’t need adornment or refurbishment – they just need to be loved and appreciated and recognized for the classics that they are.

What do you think about these new Mouse ears? Are you classic black or faux new?
