While this project doesn’t involve actual sewing, and there are no needles involved, it will help teach little ones the concept of sewing. It will also give them something fun to do. The projects turn out cute and kids may want to hang them up in their rooms, hang them on the fridge or give them as gifts. It is a fun little project and is another one that is handy for taking along on road trips. Just grab a little tote back or storage box to contain the items needed, and keep a few sewing cards and yarn in the car.
Start with cardboard or craft foam. If using plain cardboard, paint it to give it a background color. Next, sketch an image or design onto the background. Use a hole punch to make several holes along the lines. Simple designs or images are best for small children, and you may want to add fewer holes.
Select several different colors of yarn and cut strands to the appropriate size. You can determine the size of the longest strand needed by threading it through the holes and then cutting off a little extra. Make additional strands about the same size. You can always cut off any excess when finished.
Apply some tape to one end of each strand of yarn. Use enough tape to create a rigid end, suitable for threading through holes, but don’t use so much that it makes it difficult to pass the end through the holes.
Have children begin threading from the backside, pull the yarn nearly all the way through, and then tie a knot in back. When your child finishes using that color, tie another knot in the back and cut away any excess. Use different colored yarn for different images, such as brown for the outline of a tree trunk, green for the leafy area, etc.
