Make Your Own Tiles

This might sound like a wild idea, but making your own tiles is a great way to add a personal touch and to save some money. You can create your own ceramic tiles at a studio, which can be simple or uniquely decorative, or you can build your own molds and make concrete tiles. Make them thin enough that they won’t be too heavy, and you’ll have a new floor that should hold up and look great for many years to come.

Make tile molds by nailing together heavy wood trim with mitered corners, or find a pre-made rubber or resin mold at home improvement centers or online.

You don’t want to make very large tiles, because they are easier to break. If you do, you will need to add supports inside. Instead, make smaller ones, such as 6” x 6” or 8” x 8” tiles. You can stain concrete if you want to add color, and you can add a clear coat to protect the surface and make it shiny.

Concrete is a popular home interior material these days, featuring everything from concrete countertops, backsplashes, flooring, and even furniture, such as tabletops. You can even tile a shower with concrete tiles. Concrete is inexpensive and is of course a very sturdy, long lasting, and fairly versatile material.

Using concrete in your home décor is also a great way to add a masculine touch to any space. It will work great in many different homes and with many different decorating styles. Concrete would be a perfect accent to complement the industrial look of a loft. It is also great in the workshop, studio, or garage, since you can’t do much to damage it.

There are simple directions on packages of concrete to help you mix it properly for specific uses.
