Make Your Own Headboard

Adding a headboard to your bed gives your entire bedroom a more finished look. If you don’t have a headboard, consider making one yourself. There are various materials you can use to create a simple, yet attractive headboard without the benefit of carpentry skills.

Try inserting a folding screen between the head of your bed and the wall. A screen will provide color and texture and create the same effect achieved by installing a traditional headboard.

Another option is to hang a quilt, a fabric panel, or a large canvas covered in fabric at the head of the bed. The fabric should coordinate with your bedding in order to tie these elements together.

You can also paint the wall or cover it with fabric to create a focal wall that will frame the bed. Use a contrasting color to make a dramatic difference or choose a tone just a bit lighter or a bit darker than the others walls for a more subtle effect. If you don’t want to paint the entire wall, tape off a large square, rectangle, or other shape of your choice at the head of the bed and paint it.

If you want to add storage as well, place free-standing shelving units behind the bed. The lower shelves won’t be accessible, but the upper shelves can be used for handy storage or to display books or collectibles. It is a good idea to choose shelving units with back panels and bolt the units to wall studs to make them more secure.

A fun idea is to hang a window frame in place of a headboard. It not only acts as a headboard but also brings an architectural element to the space. This idea works great in children’s rooms, especially if you place a landscape print in the window frame and add a cute pair of curtains (in children’s rooms, it is best to use a frame without glass).
