We already discussed scheduling math. Now let’s discuss scheduling out phonics and language lessons to enhance your story study. We will stick with a week long study and schedule accordingly.
As an example of how to create your schedule and as before we will use The Three Bears for any needed detailed explanations or examples. Let’s continue with scheduling out Language and Phonics.
Phonics/Language: Narration is a wonderful tool to assess how much your child understands about the story and to teach your child to understand the story. Narration and phonics work will be daily.
Monday: Narration does not need to last more than ten minutes. The first day you can simply have your child retell the story. To make it more interesting for the child you can have her tell the story to a sibling, pet or stuffed animal.
Introduce the letter you chose for your study. In this case we picked “b”. First, teach your child letter recognition. Have her pick out the letter amongst other letters. You can do this using a whiteboard or foam letters or any way you have on hand. Once your child can recognize the letter move onto what the letter sounds like. Again, lessons do not need to last more than ten minutes or less.
Tuesday: Have your child act out the story using puppets, stuffed animals or doing a skit. A skit is fun with multiple children so grab the rest of your kids and have them put on a show.
Review the letter “b” from the lessons you studied the day before. Today, introduce short “b” words such as bear, bat, ball, etc.
Wednesday: Today have your child crate a poster or a picture of her favorite scene from the story. You can get creative and have her create a “wanted” poster for Goldilocks by the bear family.
Review the previous phonics lessons. Present short words or images with different beginning letters and some with the letter you are studying. Have your child determine which words begin or images of words begin with “b”.
Thursday: Ask your child some questions about the story to encourage critical thinking. Questions such as, “what do you think happened to Goldilocks?” “Why do you think she did not return?” “What you would do if you were Goldilocks?”
Review the previous phonics lessons. Today put more action into your phonics study by having your child go on a “b” scavenger hunt or act out “b” words.
Friday: Have your child draw her favorite character from the story and tell why that character is her favorite. Of course you can come up with many creative ideas for your narration time.
Review the previous phonics lessons. Practice lowercase and uppercase letter recognition. You can do this on a whiteboard or with foam letters. If you do not think this lesson fits with your child or any of the lessons adjust as necessary. This is merely a guide.
