Making a New Year’s Resolution for Marriage

null

This is a good time to reflect and take stock and make resolutions that will improve the quality of your marriage.

I loved this recipe for beauty in Zaphon a writing newsletter I periodically receive.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed – never throw out anyone.
As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands: one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.
Audrey Hepburn

It seems to me, these words could be a good resolution for the New Year. What better place to start applying these words of wisdom from Audrey Hepburn than with the people closest to us – our spouse and our family members?

Imagine what a difference it would make if instead of criticizing or nagging our spouse or finding fault, we found things to praise him or her for.

It’s always easy to see the things people do wrong. How about looking for the positives instead?

In marriages and families it’s important to eat together and take time to talk. Important too to invite others at times into our family circle and make them feel welcome. It’s also a blessing to be able to help those less fortunate. If we think the economic situation is bad in our country, spare a thought for those in third world countries. Maybe you and your spouse could make it a new year’s project to do something to help, like sponsor a child?

Joys as well as troubles are meant to be shared. It is especially important we take time to talk to our spouse but not be so eager to get our own words out that we forget to listen to them.

Our marriage like anything else needs to be restored, renewed, revived and reclaimed.

In marriage each of us is there to be support and help to the other. Maybe if we resolved to apply these ideas in 2009 our marriages would not only be on a firmer footing but more loving and satisfying as well. It’s surely worth a try.
