I really mean it when I tell my neighbor that she should seriously consider starting her own scrapbooking business. The woman is a machine when it comes to cranking out unique layouts. What’s more, she owns just about every scrapbooking tool known to man, and her scrapbook space is the size of a small shop.
Each time I suggest that she turn her passion for scrapbooking into profit, she politely brushes me off with a smile. Part of me doesn’t blame her. Starting a business is hard work and it takes time, patience and perseverance. My neighbor is retired and I’m sure the last thing she wants is to work 16-hour days to make some extra cash.
While many avid scrapbooks dream of running their own business by making memory books for an array of clients, design talent is only half of what’s needed to succeed. Advertising is a huge part of owning your own scrapbooking business.
These days, you need to promote your business online as well as within your own community. Personally, I think having a presence on the Internet is vital in today’s high-tech society. If you are going to run a successful home-based scrapbook business, you will need your own website where you can show off sample pages and post testimonials from satisfied clients.
Another way to get the word out about your new business is to visit existing scrapbook forums and online message boards. These resources see a lot of traffic and you can market yourself as an expert in the field in a short amount of time. Plus, it’s quick, easy and free.
Finally, if you don’t want to go the Internet route, then consider making business fliers that you can distribute around town. Post them in supermarkets or local craft and scrapbook supply shops. You might even consider placing an ad in the paper.
