Making Baby Food

When I was a first-time Mom, I had no intention of making my own baby food. I was too overwhelmed with just being a new Mom that I just didn’t even entertain the idea. However, with my second, I wanted to give it a try. I didn’t have to buy a lot of tools and gadgets to make it easy and simple. But, I did have a lot of questions.

One website I turned to was Wholesome Baby Food. This website is a great resource for any Mom that is looking to make their own baby food. It is full of recipes, FAQ’s, and ways to make it simpler for every Mom. One reason I turned to this website was because of my child’s food allergy issues. I had to do a lot of things differently with him because of that. One issue we had early on was that he could not have any typical first foods like rice cereal or oats. He was allergic to both.

So, making our own baby food seemed logical. I’m sad to say that I didn’t always stick with it, but it was a nice resource to have. You never know when your child might not be able to tolerate something store bought, so making yourself knowledgable on how to make your own baby food is a good idea.

For me, it was as simple as cooking fruits and vegetables, liquifying them in my blender, and then storing them. There are some rules to follow though. That’s why the above mentioned website is great. Like, how to know which foods to cook with skins? Which ones without? If you cook things too long, then they can lose their nutrients.

A friend gave me the tip of freezing the food in ice cube trays. It’s a 1 oz. serving. Once frozen, pop them out of the tray and into a ziploc bag that you can easily label. As your child grows, just put as many 1 oz. servings into one bag as you know they will eat in one feeding. You can easily pull those out, heat them on the stove, and you’re done. It really is that simple.

For us, our life saver food was avocado. My child had difficulties getting a lot of calories, and avocados were a food he loved. And, when he got older, he could hold a half in his hand, and just eat out of it with a spoon. Perfect.

There really are plenty of ways to make feeding time simpler, and making your baby food can be a great way to know that your child is getting 100% pure fruits and veggies.
