Making Old into New

Are you interested in some tips that will help you use old things to make new items for your home? If so, I think you’ll like the ones listed here. These ideas will help you update your home and save money at the same time.

Do you have an old comforter lying around? Perhaps you redecorated your child’s room and held onto the comforter, which was beginning to show its age. That’s great, because there are some terrific ways to use it. It works perfectly in place of quilt batting when you are recovering a piece of furniture.

Whether you’re adding a slipcover or re-upholstering, it will turn out better if you cover the piece with batting before applying fabric. If it’s a large piece the cost of batting can really add up. The old comforter will supply you with quite a bit of cushioned material to use in place of batting, which will definitely save you some money. You can also use an old comforter to stuff pillows.

If you don’t have an old comforter, consider purchasing one at a thrift store or yard sale. They are generally inexpensive, and should still cost less than purchasing enough batting or fiber fill to complete your projects. Just wash and dry thoroughly before using.

When it comes to pillows, you can also use old socks to stuff them. If one sock is missing or if they have holes, stuff pillows with them instead of throwing them away. You can also use other clothing, such as a shirt that is stained beyond saving. Maybe you have an old sheet or towel that has seen better days. Any of these items will work.

Picture frames can also be used in many ways, even if the glass has been removed. Make one into a simple bulletin board by covering corrugated cardboard with fabric and placing it in the frame. Here’s a two for one deal: Re-use an item of clothing that you no longer wear for the fabric you need for this project.
