Making the Big Game Fun for Kids

Super Bowl XLIV kicks off in just over a week, but football fans don’t have to wait that long to see stars of the NFL hit the gridiron. The NFL Pro Bowl takes place in just two days, and I know many people will be commemorating the event with viewing parties.

This is the first year since 1980 that the Pro Bowl will be held somewhere other than Honolulu, Hawaii. This year’s event takes place in Miami, Florida, before the Super Bowl. It’s also taking place before most children’s bedtime, which means you will have to find some way to keep the kiddos busy if you want to concentrate on the game.

If you plan to host a Pro Bowl viewing party, then consider the following kid-friendly activities to keep your little ones from turning your shindig into a whine-fest:

PIN THE BALL ON THE GOAL POST

Materials:

White poster board

Brown card stock

White marker

Tape

Blindfold

Directions:

Cut out strips from the poster board and create a goal post. You can make it as big as you want. The suggested measurements are: Uprights and the crossbar–20 inches long each; Post–6 inches tall.

Attach the poster board goal post to the wall with tape.

Use the brown card stock to cut out 6-inch-long footballs.

Use the white marker to decorate each card stock footballs. Also, write the name or initials of each player on the football so he or she knows which one is his/hers.

Place a piece of double-sided tape on the back of each football.

Have players line up about 5 to 8 feet away from the goal depending on age. Blindfold each player and spin him around a few times before setting him loose to try to stick his football between the uprights. Whoever gets closest to the center of the goal posts, wins.

FUN FOOTBALLS

Here’s a great way to recycle plastic Easter eggs.

Materials:

Plastic Easter eggs

Paintbrush

Brown paint

White marker

Small candy, stickers, erasers, etc.

Directions:

Paint the Easter eggs brown. When the paint has dried, add laces and stripes with the white marker to resemble a football. Next, fill each “football” with the candy and other treats. Hand out as prizes for football-themed games or as a party favor at the end of the night.
