Making The Old New Again

Church music can create problems, largely because everyone has their own ideas about what is good and appropriate music for church and what is not. Just take a look at the forum on church music and see how different people’s ideas are just within our families.com community.

I admit that though I like the newer songs written for church, I also appreciate and love to sing some of the older hymns like, ‘And Can it Be,’ ‘I Cannot Tell,’ and ‘To God Be The Glory,’ etc.

What is interesting is when the old becomes new again -in other words, when the words of hymns get a new lease of life though a new tune. I always thought the words to Take My Life were great but the tune did nothing for me. Even as I say this, I am prepared that others may have a different opinion. But now Garage Hymnal, an Australian group has written a new tune for it. And it works well.

Similarly with ‘It Is Well With My Soul.’ I love the new tune. It gives new life to the words and introduces the lyrics to a whole new generation. The same with the up-tempo tune Nicky Chiswell wrtote to ‘My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less.’

Of course like all things that are tried sometimes, in my opinion and again I realize others may have a different opinion, it doesn’t quite work. I love some of Ruth Buchanan’s work but when it comes to ‘Rock Of Ages’ I prefer the old tune. But I know plenty of other people who have adopted and enjoy the new tune rather than the old.

Music is important to me. I can’t imagine a world without it. And enjoy being part of my church’s music team. Even though music is an integral part of church services, it should never take over and become the most important aspect.

The musicians are there not to perform and be the focus but to direct our hearts and thoughts towards God through the music. The aim is that people will not sing with the mouths but really think about the words, will come into relationship with the Lord and take the words to heart.

How much notice do you take of the words as you sing? Do they draw your closer to God and make you more receptive to His Word and what He has to say to you through the sermon, through the prayers and through the music itself. If not, then the music is not doing its job, which is not to take over but to complement the teaching of God’s Word. Do you agree?
