Making Your Old Holiday Dress Look New

It’s holiday party time. That means you will need party dresses for the various events you attend each year. Whether your holiday party is work related or social, you don’t want to show up in your everyday wardrobe. You will need something special.

You don’t have to spend a few hundred dollars at a high end boutique to be the bell of the ball this holiday season. If you’re like me, you already have some really great holiday dresses in your closet. They may however need a small bit of updating.

Here are some tips you can give to update your old holiday dress and make it brand new.

Add beads or sequins. Beads and sequins are very popular this year. In addition, if your outfit has a tiny stain or rip, adding sequins strategically is an excellent way to cover up minor damage on your party dress.

Add broaches: Purchase a set of broaches or two or three identical broaches to make your own set. Add these to the neckline or waist of your dress for an instant update.

Change the length: You can shorten an evening gown to create a cocktail dress, or you can have a short dress lengthened to with coordinating fabric.

Dress in layers: Wear a long sleeve sheer top under a spaghetti strap or strapless dress. Put a beaded top over a simple dress to give it more pizazz.

Belt it: A shapeless or sheath dress can be given a new silhouette with one of those new wide stretchy belts. I just bought my daughter one for just $6.00 that has allowed her to update her entire wardrobe from last winter.

Before you begin your dress makeover project, it is a good idea to go window shopping to look at and try on some of the latest dresses to get a good idea of what you would like to wear. Take a mental note of how the new dresses may be similar to something you already have. This way, you will know which old dress to makeover into a new creation for this years holiday dress.
