Do you find that your kitchen cabinets often appear to be bursting at the seams? How do they fill up so fast? It’s all stuff we need, right? From spices to storage containers, lids, glasses, gadgets, and more, we always seem to be adding more stuff to every storage area.
Here are some tips to better organize and utilize the space you have and keep the clutter to a minimum:
Contain those Food Storage Containers and Lids
First, go through your storage containers and lids. Make sure each container has a lid that fits. Get rid of any that no longer have lids. Stack the remaining containers neatly. Stack the lids in order of size and place them beneath the containers or place the containers near the sidewall of the cabinet and slide the lids in beside them. If you have lots of containers and lids, use one of the largest bowls for storing lids, so they won’t fall out of the cabinet when you’re looking for one.
Speaking of looking for lids, another good tip is to make matching up storage containers and lids simpler by marking them. You can add simple stickers or mark them with a permanent marker. Those little round stickers that come in assorted colors (often used to price garage sale items) work great. Use one color for small containers and lids, another for medium, large, etc. Alternatively, you can mark a tiny S,M, L, on the bottoms of bowls and the edges of lids, or number the different containers and lids to make them easier to sort and find.
*A handy way to store jars of spices is to use a baby food jar caddy.
Contain Plastic Grocery Bags
Save the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels. Thread one large plastic bag through the tube, with both handles at one end. Tie a large know outside the other end, until it will no longer slip through the tube. Use the handles to hang the tube inside a cabinet or pantry door. Stuff extra bags into the tube to store them. Keep one or two tubes filled with bags, and dispose of the others to clear out more clutter.
*Use the bags you’re going to toss and fill them with other stuff that can go!
