Singing sensation Mariah Carey is known for sporting some serious bling. She was dripping with jewels when she appeared at two recent charity events, but these days you never know if a celebrity’s baubles are from her own collection or simply “borrowed” from famous jewelers like Harry Winston. Though in Carey’s case we may no longer have to wonder if the diamonds are indeed hers.
The London Mirror is reporting that the “big-lunged belter” was recently gifted nearly $6 million worth of jewels by Prince Azim, “the seemingly star struck” son of the Sultan of Brunei. According to the paper, the glittery accessories included an 8-carat flawless diamond and a platinum necklace and complementary ring, which were allegedly presented to Carey just before she stepped onstage for her sold-out Madison Square Garden show.
Perhaps in an effort to be coy (or perhaps understated), Prince Azim did not present the jewels to Carey himself. Rather, the paper says “a special envoy” for the Prince was sent by private jet to deliver the sparkly gifts. Given the family’s estimated $40-billion-plus fortune, the diamonds probably didn’t set the Prince back anymore than a single rose would an ordinary concertgoer.
The paper says, not surprisingly, Carey was “overjoyed” by the gifts. (Oh to be rich and famous… funny how it seems that the people who can afford such luxurious gifts on their own are the very ones that have “special envoys” jetting half way around the world to help them add to their collections.)
Interestingly, the paper went on to report that since Carey’s gifting from Prince Azim, some are speculating that the royal may also be the “mysterious benefactor who purportedly sent Carey a diamond ring and matching bracelet shortly before she performed in Monaco late last year.” A European newspaper said at the time that Carey was “excited” — although apparently not “overjoyed” — by those sparklers.
