Mark the Milestone

Graduation is an important milestone regardless of whether you are moving on from kindergarten, high school or college. Many families mark the special occasion with parties filled with presents, games and food. However, deciding on a venue is often easier said than done.

If you are still searching for the perfect way to honor your graduate on commencement day, consider the following ideas:

Formal: Interpret it as you may, but when my daughter graduated from kindergarten last year, the last place she wanted to celebrate was at McDonald’s. No Happy Meals for my kid on her special day. Rather, she chose to party at one of the fanciest restaurants in town. We had gone there once before on my birthday and she ordered the steak, which she absolutely loved. However, given how expensive it is to dine there I told her that we could only come back on special occasions. She chose her graduation day. If you are on a tight budget, you might consider including immediate family only. Still, it just goes to show that you don’t have to be a high school or college graduate to want to mark your special milestone in style.

Informal: For a more laid-back celebration, consider hosting an outdoor barbecue. This may be an especially appropriate choice if you are entertaining a large family plus a bunch of your graduate’s friends. If your funds are really limited, then make it a potluck and have everyone bring a dish to pass, though make sure you include at least some of the graduate’s favorites.

Semi-formal: If a five-star restaurant party is not an option, but you don’t want to celebrate your child’s commencement in your backyard, then consider compromising. For example, you could rent a hall and have the party catered buffet-style. You could save even more by asking parents of other graduates if they would like to pitch in and rent the venue for a group party. This kills multiple birds with a few stones as you can split the cost of food and decorations while giving your child and his pals a safe place to celebrate their special day.
